Geocaching
in Saw Mill River Audubon Sanctuaries

Geocaching is a exciting combination of nature and technology enjoyed by people of all ages including families with young children and seniors.

Participants use handheld GPS receivers to follow coordinates found at geocaching.com in order to locate hidden caches. As of the summer of 2009, nine different geocaches have been hidden in sanctuaries owned by Saw Mill River Audubon.

Once a geocache is found, the finder signs a log book in the cache to record their find and may also trade with simple items stored in the cache container.

To find out more about geocaching visit www.geocaching.com

Responsible geocachers always ask permission of the landowner before hiding caches.
Cache locations are reviewed before listing at geocaching.com to make sure they comply with safe and environmentally responsible guidelines.

Our sanctuaries are maintained by a part-time caretaker. Volunteers assist on trail maintenance days.
We also rely on our sanctuary neighbors to watch over these special habitats. In addition, a group of volunteer "Trail Walkers" monitors individual sanctuaries and reports on their conditions.[Trail Walkers]

Wildlife habitat protection involves more than owning and protecting wildlife sanctuaries.

We also encourage homeowners and managers of commercial properties to make their parcels safe and attractive for birds and other wildlife. (To find out more, visit the Audubon at Home online resources from National Audubon.)

Reducing impervious surfaces, protecting water quality, planting native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers and reducing pesticide use are healthy actions that benefit both wildlife and people.

Come visit our sanctuaries!
They are open every day from dawn to dusk free of charge.
